Stumbled upon this wonderful item for sale on Etsy and had to share. I think it’s a wonderful description of Maine’s place in the United States, as well as the classic Yankee character.

Did You Know…?

Five Mainers have been granted knighthoods by the British Empire. Two of those were born in Sangerville - Sir Hiram Maxim and Sir Harry Oakes.

Sir Hiram Maxim was a prolific inventor.

Sir Harry Oakes was a gold prospector and played a large part in the development of Nassau in the Bahamas.

More to come on the other three Sir Mainers eventually.

Did You Know…?

Jonathan Cilley, Congressman from Maine, was killed in a duel by Congressman William Graves of Kentucky on February 24th, 1838. Following this duel, Congress passed a law banning duels within the boundaries of Washington, DC.

The famed 20th Maine regiment, which has been credited with turning the tide of the Battle of Gettysburg, was originally formed as a regiment to absorb overflow volunteers who could not be placed in the 16-19 regiments.
